Because government workers are employed in a wide variety of occupations, they provide a diverse cross section of workers to examine. However, during a 10-year study revealed that 6,455 government workers suffered a fatal work injury, and more than half of these fatalities resulted from transportation incidents. The next largest event or exposure category was assaults and violent acts, which accounted for 22 percent of the workplace fatalities in government over the 10-year period. Of these 1,425 deaths from assaults and violent acts, 1,058 were homicides and 352 resulted from self-inflicted injuries.
